Tea is a drink that has been around since time immemorial. For those who are addicted to their cup of caffeine, they might find that switching to tea has immense benefits, with no compromise on taste. There are different types of teas with different properties and we provide a short overview if you are just starting your tea journey.

Black Tea

Loose Black TeaBlack tea is most definitely one of the most popular drinks available around the world. Black tea is generally stronger in flavour than the less oxidized teas (green, oolong and white). As other types of tea, it is made from the same plant - Camelia Sinensis. There are 2 types of black tea processing -  Orthodox and CTC (crush-tear-curl). Orthodox way involves hand-picking tea leaves, withering to reduce moisture, rolling in order to bruise the leaves and start oxidation, oxidating to create color and flavor, and then applying the heat that stops oxidation. In CTC method, the tea leaves are cut into smaller pieces instead of rolling. The cut leaves are oxidize more quickly, producing a one-dimensional, consistent, strong and bold black tea. The cut pieces also easily fit into commercial tea bags, which are more popular with end consumers than loose leaf tea.

Black tea is known to contain many tannins and minerals. The right amount of tannins has several anti-carcinogenic properties due to its anti-oxidising nature. The caffeine in black tea is released slowly into the body thereby eliminating any side-effects.
